RESERVOIR PARK ORIENTEERING COURSE WORK SHEET PAGE 1
The course consists of a one-mile point-to-point orienteering course, and measuring the width and measuring the height of designated items. A map and instructions for the course can be obtained from the Scout Shop at: the BSA office located at 3220 Cantrell Road in Little Rock; the council web site at http://www.quapawbsa.org/ or by calling the Council, at 501-664-4780 ext. #238. For Reservoir Park camping reservations call Little Rock Parks and Recreation at 501-371-6839.
The Point to point orienteering course consists of a series of aluminum surveying markers, which are engraved with the BSA "fleur-de-lei" emblem, and a number on their surface. These are installed flush with the ground throughout the Park. A map and directions can printed from these web pages, or obtained from the BSA Scout Shop.
First, determine your pace or stride before beginning the course. Located along the east border of the parking lot you will find two silver markers each engraved with the fleur-de-lei and the letter P. They are spaced 100 feet apart to help you determine your pace or stride by using BSA methods.
You will be given a series of compass bearings and corresponding distances. Follow the compass bearing, using a compass, and walk to the next marker using your pace and stride. Record the identifying marker number on your instruction and map sheets. How well you follow each bearing and distance, will tell how successful you are in finding the next marker.
Your starting marker will be your finish marker on the one-mile course. All markers will be used to generate multiple courses. Your Scoutmaster will tell you your starting marker.
You will determine the width of a stream between two markers and the height of an object. These measurements must be made with approved BSA methods.
Determine the width of a stream (between the two silver markers). Imagine that you need to know the width of the creek. Remember, you cannot cross the creek due to its depth and the presence of hungry Arkansas Alligators (hypothetical). On the west side of the footbridge by the bathhouse, rum north and take 18 paces to locate the first marker. It is on the north side at the base of a pine tree. The other marker is located on the north side of a pine tree on the opposite side of the creek. Each is engraved with the fleur-de-lei and the letter D. Use a BSA method to calculate the stream width.
Find the Height of an Object. Go to the northwest corner of the ball field by a concrete support wall over a culvert next to an asphalt path. Find the silver marker engraved with a fleur de lei and an H, set in the grass between the wall and path. Now, look back across the ball field and locate the second stadium floodlight from the north corner of the field. Determine its height using an approved BSA method. A Scoutmaster will determine score the accuracy of each scout's effort.
