Troop Web Site Author

It is my pleasure to have worked on this web page. It is my Wood Badge ticket item. I have had to learn how to build a web page from scratch.  It has been challenging and instructive. I have built this web site from a perspective of how Scouting is supposed to work.  I hope it draws wider participation from church membership.  If they want the best training for their sons or grandsons, they’ll find it in troop 55, and they can help to make it even better.

I have included pesky topics that recur over and over.  Scout leaders will find topics, to which they can refer Boy Scouts in order to reduce the time they spend repeating themselves.  The web site is designed to compliment adult leader efforts.  Permission slips, conduct agreements, and active Scout computation worksheets can be copied from any computer work station and returned to the Scoutmaster as required.

I have built the Troop 55 web page using “NetObjects Fusion 7” software.  The Troop will have to obtain this software to efficiently maintain this web site.  It is really great software with an extensive manual that can be copied from the installing CD.  It comes with an abbreviated introductory manual that is recommended.  An adult committee member or responsible Scout can maintain this web site.

As it requires some attention to detail, I would recommend that that this assignment be for a minimum of one year.  When a new person is appointed he should receive training and assistance from the outgoing responsible person. The “NetObjects Fussion” software can be obtained by contacting  www.netobjects.com/.

In the process of learning how to build a web page, I read “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Creating a Web Page, Fourth Edition.”  Concerning “NetObjects Fusion, on page 399, it has this to say: “This is an extremely powerful editor that not only excels at regular HTML, but can also make it a breeze to create truly interactive sites that use JavaScript, Java, style sheets, and even dynamic HTML. It also features some amazing site management tricks (such as automatically updating links if you move or rename a page).” It has the power to add voice, music, and other embellishments. I have avoided such complexities because I wanted to develop what I considered essentials to the smooth operation of the Troop.

I will commit to maintaining this web page for a period of one year from February 1, 2003.

I dedicate this web site to: Mr. Bill Neal, the epitomy of what Scoutmaster’s should strive to achieve; Joseph Henry, my New York Fire Department Cousin who gave his life at the World Trade Center on 911; and my sons, grandsons, and the many fine adults and young Scouts I have met through Scouting.
